Back when I wore a skanky green school uniform and nurtured my future back problems by dragging my weight in books to my secondary school, I encountered a race of people that I would become fascinated with over the years. This efficient and straight shooting people were known as "Germans", or "Frenchos" as a hard-chaw in my class used to call them.
This guy, "Jim" lets call him, was neither a nerd nor a scobe, he was like a tough guy with brains, but he was insecure about showing this sometimes, probably because he had to save face being from a hard are- so Jim's tough guy side would come out of the woodwork during school and slag the shit out of anyone in his vicinity. Everyone got it, even the polite visiting Germans. "Hey Frencho! Frencho!" he would shout at them. That was kind of it, I never really got it, it was a stupid thing to say..or so I thought until now.
For the past week I have been wandering the streets of Berlin and the halls of the former Stasi headquarters for the Bright skate tradeshow. However, instead of encountering the traditional wurtz chomping Deutsch speaking locals, I seemed to be surrounded by French talking socialites. Everywhere I went, whether it was for food, drink or a skate, I seemed to be flanked by the smell of garlic & five dudes in beres. Could it be that Jim was onto something? Are the German's actually Frenchos? Could I be on to some sort of multinational propaganda related conspiracy?
Halt! There's a twist! Could it be that my brain is fried and I've loosely tied a stupid story from my youth to my experiences in Berlin so that this collection of photos from the last seven days have some words to accompany them?
Would I be see so cheap as to do that to my two loyal readers? I'm afraid so.
Oh wait, something of substance! The reason I was there was to film with the multifaceted Sergej Vutuc for my new skate photographer documentary! He's the Grizzly Adams looking dude on the left, on the right is a blurry Giovanni Grazzani, both solid dudes, both danced for my vintage lenses, cheers lads!
