This lump of mechanism right here has had me biting my fat lip to bits with stress..
I've begun the lengthily editing process of my new skate photographer documentary and the first step in this process is to telecine all the super 8 film.
I'm using two projectors, one of which has a fixed frame rate, but a lovely bulb, which means sharp images, but sometimes an unusable flickery image.
The other one, the one pictured, requires a transformer as its from the states. What's more, it chews the film if you feed it in normally, so to avoid this I've to rip off the side panel, nurse the film through, then finally get it on the take up reel on the other side.
After all of that, you've to focus, frame up, white balance, choose a flicker free speed..etc etc..anyway,the lens on this new projector produces a very bizarre image..far from perfect, but I really like it.
So now I'm scanning every reel of film 2 or 3 times, or more! I'll be interested in seeing the results when I actually get stuck into the editing process.
The aul analogue methods are quite labour intensive, often stressful, never perfect and most definitely time consuming, BUT the unpredictable nature of super 8 is half the charm for me. Its hands on and it leaves a lot of room for experimentation should you be willing to put the hours and effort in.. hopefully i can come up with something a bit different looking.
