The idea for this show came to me one evening while watching 'Reeling in the years' on RTE 1. The show basically runs through a different year of news events relevant but not exclusive to Ireland, showing some archive footage set to music from that year. In this particular episode (I think it was reeling in 1981) they showed footage of Israeli and Palestinian peace talks taking place. Hmmm, isn't that happening right now? Could it be that humans continually repeat the same actions over and over? Well the more I thought about it, the more examples I could think of, in fact, I was getting too many ideas, so I had to refine it a little so I would have a focus. I decided to narrow it down to (mainly but not completely exclusively) individuals, and how the masses can make or break figures that come into public sphere. The main idea I'm trying to communicate is not to panic or get too excited, because if you examine human behaviour, you'll often see many actions being repeated to the same 'shocking' reaction- for example: reacting with shock to the election of a bad actor (Arnie) on the Republican ticket to a position of great power, you don't have to think too far back to find a comparable dude..the same comparison is drawn in Irish policitcs with the resignation of a controversial Fianna Fail party Taoiseach, it already happened in the '80's.
In sticking with various public individuals, I've tried to draw comparisons in the worlds of politics, religion, music and skateboarding (had to get it in there). The message remains the same through all these different life scenarios, and that is, in terms of human behaviour, history just keeps on repeating itself.
